Annual Reports

The Air Monitoring Section measures for six principal pollutants, which are also known as the "criteria" pollutants. The "criteria" pollutants are:

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Ozone
  • Lead
  • Particulate matter
  • Sulfur dioxide

Monitoring stations consisting of various monitoring devices are located throughout Cuyahoga County to measure these pollutants. The locations are selected utilizing published guidance from Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) and USEPA. Monitoring sites are usually established in high population areas or near pollutant sources. There are currently over 20 criteria pollutants permanent sites and seven special project temporary sites.

The monitoring network consists of continuous monitors and intermittent samplers. Continuous monitors operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except for time required for calibration, maintenance and repair. These monitors also referred to as analyzers, utilizing various chemical reactions and absorption principles. The units are capable of producing continuous hourly readings. After review, the data is forwarded to OEPA and USEPA. Continuous monitors and intermittent samplers are utilized to measure the various air pollutants. In addition to the criteria pollutants the section also is involved in a number of special projects that monitor for air toxics and other health related environmental substances.

The section is staffed with Environmental Monitoring Specialists, Instrument Repair Technicians, Laboratory Personnel and Quality Control Personnel.
