Division of Environment

The City of Cleveland’s Division of Environment performs all of its investigations with the authority of the State of Ohio Department of Health or the Ohio EPA. Our Division strives to evoke confidence as we promote health and quality of life.  Our daily objective is preventing or controlling those diseases or deaths that result from interactions between people and their environment.  Environmental health programs seek to minimize or eliminate risk factors in the human environment that threaten life and health. The span of investigations this Division performs is diverse: from detecting high levels of lead in some of our youngest citizens to the inspection of the upscale restaurants throughout the City. These inspections may be state mandated or complaint generated; nonetheless, they are performed with precision and professionalism.

Our programs include:

• Lead Safe Living which targets children that have blood lead levels above 5 μg/dL
• Food Safety that requires all Restaurants, Grocery Stores, Temporary Food Operators(Food Vendors at Festivals, Special Events etc.) and Mobile Food Operators to conform with the Ohio Uniform Food Safety Code
• Solid and Infectious Waste Disposal  that enforce state codes
• Vector Borne Disease which assists in the eradication of various rodents and insects
• Enforcement of Public Places which insures the cleanliness of Hotels, Motels, Barbershops and Laundromats
• Environmental Health as it pertains to the cleanliness of private homes (rodent harborage, trash, debris, high weeds and grass)

The majority of our staff is out in the public investigating and informing our citizens and operators of the proper techniques to ensure wholesomeness is the standard operating procedure.  Our inspectors are well informed and tactful at all times.  All investigations are thorough and a conclusion to each situation is to remedy any negative findings with firm concise authority.
