Preventing Diabetes
There are many things you can do to reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Before people develop Type 2 Diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes." If you have pre-diabetes, you have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
By losing a modest amount of weight, being physically active most days and eating healthier, people with pre-diabetes can delay or prevent the onset of the disease.
Check out the National Diabetes Education Program's Game Plan to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes for a step-by-step guide to improving your health and reducing your diabetes risk.
Are You at Risk for Diabetes?
The first step is to know your risk for developing diabetes. You could have pre-diabetes and not even know it. The Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland estimates that 1 in 13 people in Northeast Ohio has diabetes and 33% don't know they have it.
