Our Mission
To provide high-quality, evidence-based healthcare services that improve health outcomes, reduce health disparities, and promote wellness throughout the community. We are committed to increasing access to care, eliminating barriers, and fostering a healthier Cleveland through education, advocacy, and compassionate service.
Our History
The Cleveland Department of Public Health’s Division of Nursing has played a vital role in community health since its establishment in 1837 as part of the Cleveland Board of Health.
In 1850, the Ohio legislature authorized the creation of the Cleveland Board of Health to address public health concerns, including infectious disease control. By 1856, Dr. Frederick W. Marseilles was appointed as the city's first health officer.
Public health nursing advanced in 1901 with the founding of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Cleveland, which provided essential home healthcare services. In 1917, a partnership between the VNA, Cleveland Health Department, and Western Reserve University led to the creation of the University Public Health Nursing District, setting national standards for public health nursing and expanding services in maternal and child health, communicable disease prevention, and school-based care.
Today, CDPH continues this legacy by providing evidence-based, high-quality healthcare services that promote wellness and improve health outcomes for all Cleveland residents.
